I've only ever programmed in ARM assembly (which also has an excellent reputation, but I myself can't compare), but I heard from a lot of older programmers that the 68K was magical compared to x86 traffic light controller based architecture.

Yeah I've done quite a bit of x86 in the 90s and a little bit of 68k, and x86 is very pedestrian in comparison. No wonder people wanted to use C and other high-level languages on the PC.

DOSBox Staging v0.81.1 has been released, containing important regression fixes and a few new enhancements.

v0.81.0 was an absolute monster of a release; we went a bit crazy with it and put in about three regular major releases' worth of stuff. Because of that, this patch release is quite on the large side too—it's almost like a regular "non-obese" major release :)

Enjoy

Silly question, but is there any plan to make an Android version? Magic DOSBox is great, but I don't think the developer updates it any more. It would be nice to have some of the newer features for those of us with Retroid Pockets.

No, it's out of scope for us, and it will stay like that.

The active core dev team is 4-5 people, including me. We get some "drive by" code contributions occasionally, and sometimes a new coder shows up, but often they don't last more than 3-4 months... It's a very specialised area, we're dealing with 20+ year old legacy code, plus if you don't know much about old PC hardware, it doesn't matter if you're the best coder in the world -- your contribution options will be rather limited.

So, we simply don't have capacity for mobile, it is its own huge complicated kettle of fish (especially input handling).

Realistically, this could only be done by an entirely separate team by forking our codebase, adding the mobile related changes (there would be many), then keeping the fork up to date in lockstep with the main release. And deal with the mobile specific bug reports... and testing... and documentation...

It would be cool, so we're waiting for that team to manifest :)

Understandable. I have DOSBox Staging on my Linux box. It's been my go-to for running DOS games for the last six months. Although, I have yet to play with the 3Dfx stuff on there. You guys keep up the good work!

Yeah, me too. Magic DOSBox is pretty great and I have yet to hit any snags OTHER THAN trying to get Windows 95 running on it. I've seen it do it, and I've gone through the steps the deliver requires. That's how I discovered how MicroSoft likes to embed things in their applications to make sure they only work for specific time periods.
