Remember those old school RPGs?

Frowning at my monitor as I read your dumb post.
From this preview of Sudeki:
Colorful, cartoonish, and a little sublime. It really brings me back to the days of Dreamcast and Playstation RPG's that were oh so beautiful.
Yeah, I remember back in the day a whole five years ago those real old school RPGs. I was so young and free.

Excuse me while I mumble the words Bard's Tale, Wizardry and Might and Magic.

I feel conflicted about console RPGs. On one hand, they're not. On the other, their existence gives me something to rub in developers' faces when they tell me "turn based is dead"

I can't disagree here. They were mostly dungeon crawls. Bard's Tale II had some nicer exploration aspects, but that has nothing to do with roleplay.

My point, though, is that something that is just a few years old doesn't qualify as old-school no matter how many fond memories the seventeen year old reviewer might have of playing them all the way back to last week.

Wasteland was the predecessor to Fallout, right? And it was on the Commodore 64?

Yes, there also was a PC version and Apple version.

What was the interface like, and can I download it anywhere?
Interface was similar to Ultima IV, a 2D top-down view. I think there are C64 ROMs out there but I wouldn't know where.

You can download Wasteland here. Sugguest you find a guide also, the manuel doesn't give much feedback on usefulness on skills and the game doesn't tell you weapon stats.

I couldn't get much into Wasteland for the following:

1. Didn't like the overhead graphics, static little green blob man just annoys my eyes. The monster protraits were great but I am spoiled and don't like sprites below X-Com level (great graphics).

2. Save game system. One save slot and auto-overwrite if you left the area, had to quit the game and restart to load the save slot. I like to save a lot, and combined with avoidable bugs you can ruin an entire game (but can't backtrack and fix it with previous saves).

3. No item infomation. I had to read on an online guide that tons of these items were basically worthless or there were better versions of weapons (this hammer is better then that ax, you would never know).

4. Random encounters. I know a few games have them, but I still don't like them.

5. Animal genocide. I don't want to fight a boss named "Bunnyman" and his rabbit patrol.

6. Free typing, key-word system. I have to try different key words off the top of my head and remember correct spelling to get anywhere.

7. Interface, have to set up marcos to use skills because they require 7 buttons to use, and be sure to guess which skill works with what equipment.

Other then that I liked a lot of the elements, I just wished it took itself more seriously at the beginning and gave a lot more feedback.

You folks have to realize that when you say "old school CRPGs", you're meaning CRPGs and not dungeon-crawlers, right? That's what they used to be known, even back as far as Wizardry. There's VERY few old-school CRPGs except for Ultima. Many share some of the same traits, or added onto dungeon-crawler a bit, but offered you some other way of progressing your game through playing how the character would react.

To be honest, Ultima IV paved the way, and Fallout was one of those that gave rise to what we commonly think of as the modern CRPG. After all, it was good enough for BioWare to try and rip off. :)

Their oldest game is 1993... not very 'old school' and on top of that, their games blow. And they've changed their name 3 or 4 times (all containing the word Climax, Climax Entertainment, Climax and the best one... The Climax Group. Sounds like porn titles.)
