Unarmed/Melee in the original Fallout ?

The mechanics in FNV which made unarmed so powerful even for the untrained left me curious about one thing since I never made a melee build in Fallout, can an unarmed/melee build become strong enough to kill deathclaws in FO1 like it does in Nouvelle Fougasse ?

What counts as unarmed? If you allow the powerfist, then yes. Otherwise, I think it'll be a struggle.

I imagine the super sledge works fine, too.

The powerfist is what I meant by unarmed, since it uses the unarmed skill. In FNV the powerfist (and things like pushy, displacer gloves..) are waaaaaay too overpowered. Melee is good too but unarmed really pushes it. Anyway, FNV feels weird, there is no true downside to any of the combat skills except for the Energy Weapon and Explosives ammo, and that's only if you don't steal from the Silver Rush and the 'hood.

FO1 has a perk that makes all melee attacks criticals. I imagine you can kill any enemy in the game once you have that, although you need to be level 18 or so, which means you were probably grinding deathclaws to unlock it in the first place.

Once you get the power fist I don't think there's anything that's that hard to kill with an unarmed character. I'm quite sure I've killed deathclaws that way, even prior to the 90% (or what have you) critical perk. Just punch in the eyes repeatedly. I suppose that perk might allow you to kill them with your bare hands, though.

I recall being disappointed in Fallout 2, because they made increasing your unarmed skill give you a varierty of unarmed attacks, so I thought it might be possible to increase that skill enough to get through the whole game bare handed. But I don't think it increases enough to enable you to sensibly take out Enclave soldiers and such, so you have to eventually switch to the power fist there, too (at which point you can again easily kill most things).

I might actually do a full unarmed (AND) melee run just for the laughs if it's actually possible and only increases difficulty.

As for being bare handed ? I didn't intend on killing enclave soldiers without some knuckles or power fists.

For Fallout 1, take Fast Shot, pick up Faster H2H Attacks, and use a melee or unarmed weapon of your choice. Enjoy your 1AP H2H attacks.

:yeah:

Yeah, there were some really nice perks for unarmed combat specialist. Not as goos as heavy guns or energy weapons due to range issues (and never having nearly enough HP for close combat vs miniguns) but still very much usable.

It was ALL IRRELEVANT!!

I was gonna pickpocket that goddamn Bozar anyway!

*in fallout 2 that is*

Never did take meele and unarmed seriusly, some mentality i had when i first started playing fallout i suppose, as a dumb kid.

Gun trumps sword.

You don't need that perk for melee to shine in Fallout 1. In fact, I found the pure melee route easier than going with firearms. No need to worry anymore about ammo and carry weight, oh and Supersledgehammer is a natural deathclaw killer because of the knock-back. You also get some style-points if you say this before charging in: I'm about to drop the hammer and dispense some indiscriminate justice!

If you can stomach the utter fucking boredom. Playing melee in original Fallouts is as fun as watching Diskkeeper in action.

Disregard that. Diskkeeper is far more alluring.

The first hour or three of Fallout 2 put me off melee for life. I still have nightmares about half-heartedly prodding geckos with a spear, over and over and over and then going to the gecko caves and what do you know

No, seriously, I had an actual nightmare about it once.

Merida, again
In FO2 I was one hit KO'ing those alien fuckers and Super Mutants with nothing more than brass knuckles (no, I did not have Slayer at that moment). Never really tried going hand to hand in FO, though.

I became very fond of Power Fist after watching M.D. Geist. There's something beautiful about crushing people's faces.

There's a lack of meaningful special moves for unarmed skills. What's worse, they removed aimed attacks in F3 / New Vegas. So the only reason why you hit so hard is because of the high weapon damage, not due to high critical rates.

Spiked fists are quite usable for Fallout 1 & 2. Don't take fast shots if you want aimed attacks. A punch to the eyes can trump three normal attacks if it knocks people out. You can strip them of their ammo or weapons while they're knocked out and beat them easy.

As for New Vegas, I really wonder what they thought when you can clear the whole Mojave outpost at level 2 by just hiding behind sandbags with a spiked fist and VATS crit them multiple times as they pop up to shoot you.

I imagine you can do the same in the original Fallouts except using a one hex doorway instead. :smug:

You forgot, in New Vegas, enemies do not critical burst you in one hit. This is one thing that removed all fears from my play in New Vegas. Aside from a deathclaw attack, there really is nothing that can kill the players instantly.

Fallout 2 had the awesome kung fu tournament thingy in SF. That alone made me play a purely unarmed character. But other than that it looks silly being in heavy armour and punching people in the face (unless you planned on walking around the whole game with the badass one sleeved leather vest).

In NV using the uppercut decapitates enemies more often, and the cross severes hands, so I think those moves incorporate targeting of some sort, not sure though.

Most armor look OK imho (the metal armor doesn't have sleeves in FO1 contrary to FNV), but I always felt that it was retarded that you could use the power armor like any other piece of armor. You shouldn't even be able to run with that shit, much less lockpick, steal or use skills like doctor.
You can clearly see what's wrong with PA in FO3 and New Vegas because of all the clipping : you can't extend your arm to aim with a gun without it being in conflict with the protruding parts of the armor meaning that real world PA wouldn't allow you to aim a fucking gun. PA should only be usable for a human tank purpose, with heavy, non-aimed weapons equipped like teh miniguns. It feels totally retarded to use PA with any other kind of weapon or skills.

My first character in NV was an energy gun specialist because I liked pew-pew-pewing... Except I hardly had any ammo and had to fall back to a regular gun.

My second character was an unarmed specialist and, wow, I blew through Vikki and Vance's hotel so fast. I think I cleared out the first and second floor in under a minute each.
